Dr. Nora Volkow, who is the Director of the National Institute On Drug Abuse (NIDA) and is one of the world’s leading experts on the science behind drug addiction, declared earlier this year that Kratom is relatively safe, effective, and has lots of potential, and that further Kratom research is needed.
Specifically, in a summary of NIDA’s achievements in 2019 Dr. Nora Volkow said “Research published in June in ACS Central Science provided new insights while raising new questions about the drug kratom. Its active ingredient mitragynine acts as a weak partial agonist at the mu-opioid receptor (MOR), but new findings by a team that included researchers at Columbia and Memorial Sloan-Kettering found that the drug’s analgesic properties are significantly mediated by a metabolite produced when mitragynine is consumed orally, called 7-hydroxymitragynine. In mice, at least, this compound seems to provide analgesia but with fewer respiratory-depressing and reward-associated side effects than other opioids such as morphine. These findings point toward the potential of this drug in pain research as well as the need for further research on the pharmacology of kratom’s constituents, their toxicity and potential value in the treatment of OUD.”
One of the critical points that Dr. Nora Volkow highlights is that Kratom produces powerful analgesia, an essential property of painkilling medication, but simultaneously Kratom does not cause respiratory depression, and Kratom causes relatively little addiction.
Indeed, Kratom Cafe has discussed these issues in-depth in the past, including that Kratom has very little addiction potential and doesn’t cause respiratory depression nor overdoses due to a lack of beta-arrestin recruitment, there have been no scientifically proven Kratom deaths in history, and Kratom has very little addiction potential due to a lack of drug-like effects in the Mesolimbic pathway.
Considering this, Dr. Nora Volkow calls for more research into Kratom as a painkiller and as a treatment for opioid use disorder. Indeed, past articles on Kratom Cafe include numerous real-life stories about how Kratom can alleviate even the most severe chronic pain conditions, and real-life stories about how Kratom helped cure even the most severe drug addictions.
Thus, Dr. Nora Volkow, one of the most well-respected and influential drug addiction scientists in the world in addition to being the Director of NIDA, recognizes Kratom’s miraculous potential, and this is certainly a step in the right direction for Kratom to remain legal long term.
