A new scientific study titled ‘Pharmacokinetics and Safety of Mitragynine in Beagle Dogs‘ has dived deep into Kratom’s pharmacokinetics, and has empirically confirmed that Kratom’s effects come in two waves.
In this study Kratom was given orally to dogs, and this is the first time that Kratom pharmacokinetics have been assessed for a non-rodent animal. Of course a human study would yield more accurate results, but the data from this study is certainly more accurate than other studies which use mice and rats as their test subjects. On a side note, the scientists say the dogs didn’t have any negative side effects from the Kratom, although this does not mean that it is safe to give your dog Kratom, and I still wouldn’t recommend doing that based on some subjective reports I’ve seen from veterinarians.
It was found that the concentration of Mitragynine peaks within 30 minutes after dosing, and this corresponds to a peak in Kratom’s energetic and euphoric effects early on.
After that 7-hydroxymitragynine peaks at 100 minutes, plus or minus 30 minutes, and this corresponds to the powerful euphoria, analgesia, and relaxation that peaks 2-3 hours after a Kratom dose.
The reason for Kratom’s dual-peak nature is the metabolism of Mitragynine. Most of Kratom’s active alkaloid content is Mitragynine, and Mitragynine is metabolized in the liver into 7-hydroxymitragynine.
Therefore, Kratom’s effects start with energetic and euphoric feelings from the Mitragynine, and this transitions into more opioid, sedative, and pain relieving effects as the liver converts Mitragynine into 7-hydroxymitragynine.
Thus, next time you take Kratom, try to ascertain the dual-peaked nature of the experience. I believe these scientific results 100% match up with what I have felt subjectively. No matter what type of Kratom I take, it starts with lots of energy and euphoria, with a peak of opioid warmth, pain relief, and sedation 2-3 hours after dosing.
